An illuminating experience

Yesterday morning we headed into Boston to get dry ice for the chest freezer and for our neighbor's freezer. We also picked up 60 lbs of ice for other neighbors and for the in-laws. After we dropped off the dry ice, we headed down to the in-laws with a big pile of D batteries and ice. They were grateful but grumpy. We offered to bring them food - but they didn't want any. They have a gas stove so they've been able to cook things. We offered to take them to lunch, but they didn't want to go out.

My best neighborfriend asked us to come for dinner and consolidate our food - they were able to get a generator. So were several other neighbors - the sound was like a hundred snowblowers on a winter morning.

I made a fresh pasta sauce, brought some great heirloom tomatoes, and as we were ready to finish up dinner prep on the grill, the power came on. We all cheered, finished prepping dinner ON THE STOVE, and toasted our good fortune. It was fun to just hang out.

Last night Andy tried all the light switches, we checked in with the in-laws who still didn't have power.

On the way home, we drove partway up the street and saw that not everyone in our neighborhood has power, and calling around today, we saw that there are still big chunks of our town that have no power. We are so lucky!

Today we spent several hours cleaning out the fridge and freezer, doing wash and collecting yard debris. I had to throw out about six bags of food. I know some of it was fairly safe, but I just don't want to take a chance today.

Sometime yesterday we got a robo-call announcing that school would NOT start today, but instead next Tuesday, so Andy was given a week's reprieve. He still had to go to band rehearsal tonight.

And for now, that's what I got.

Oh - and the in-laws called. They have power. Finally.
