FIL falls
The Florida part of my family was relatively unscathed by the one two punch of hurricanes this weekend, though my sister lost some roof shingles and has been without power for nearly three days. (Wouldn't want to clean out her fridge/freezer this week...) But everyone is safe. We did not flood, but a large portion of the neighbors topsoil from his new addition project washed into our yard.

On Friday night, Andy had a "date" with his friend Jenny. We babysat so her parents could go out, and she decided she wanted to sleep over, which was fine with us. They had a great time, sharing snacks and wwatching movies on the VCR in our guest room (My son will NEVER have a TV in his room.) Anyway, we bribed them with breakfast in bed (in the guest room) so they could watch a movie when they had breakfast if they went to sleep when we told them too. We were going to let them stay up until about 10, and they actually asked us if it was time to go to bed around 9:45, so that worked out fine.

Loved, loved, loved the olympic opening ceremonies. Of course, I got the annoted version with my architecture/art historian husband, so I know what all the references were. I also snorted when the annoying bob Kostas announcer said "poor little Vietnam, they've suffered through two wars in the twentieth century..." Did his producer then scream in his earpiece - uh - Bob - WE - the United States initiated those wars...but I digress.

Saturday was cleaning and errand day - had our friends over for dinner - made lobster ravioli, antipasto with roasted eggplant, fresh tomatoes, mozzarella and basil; salami, fontinella cheese, prosciutto stuffed cherry peppers, and roasted fennel, and a pretty salad of green lettuces, yellow tomatoes and lemon cucumbers - very picturesque. I made a Cuban dessert - tres leches cake, and it was all pretty yummy.

Sunday I got up and it was a downpour, also I convinced myself that my upset stomach was really an impending heart attack. I hate hypochondria. Did wash, did more cleaning, and then my in-laws came for dinner. I made another antipasto, shrimp scampi, olive bread and salad, with a store bought key lime cheesecake for dessert. We hadn't really seen them in a while, so there was enough chatter to fill the time. Then FIL decided he wanted to watch golf on TV, detoured to the first floor bathroom, slipped on the throw rug in the bathroom and broke his leg. FIL has polio in that leg, so it was braced, but we finally convinced him to go to the ER, where the x-ray confirmed he had a spiral fracture. He has to go back tomorrow to speak to an orthopedic doctor since there were none in the ER last night. I hope things go well. Perhaps this doctor will find him a decent specialist to treat his post polio syndrome. After years of talking, we finally convinced FIL to see a specialist, who did some tests but never got back to him about the results. Did FIL call the doctor for results? Nope. Did he try to find another doctor? Nope. Did he try and get some decent pain meds? Noope. He just fumed at us. I cannot understand that. It is a freakin' phone call! PICK UP THE PHONE! I can't help feeling that he would rather suffer. Perhaps it is because he feels that he has so little control over the rest of his life that he can control this - own his suffering. I just don't know. He'll rail at waitors and at us, but not when it matters. He folds. I do not like this type of passiveness, because it makes him agressive in other areas. I can judge him because I am, you know, perfect myself.

Spouse was pretty upset and blames himself for putting the throw rugs back after we washed them. Hell, we have little rugs all over the house. His father has little rugs all over his house. I am sorry his father had the fall, but it is not anyone's fault. It was an accident.

That's all I got for today.
